how to assign a Drive letter to an Ext HDD

why would it be knacked as the seller said he had formatted it ok

as an aside - quite surprised he used a mac file format without asking first..

been off-line for 2days...

no power/heat/lights/hot water/phone in this area ..........:razz:

plan A.....formatted by a mac user
plan B.....sell and buy a NTFS drive new
plan C....goto Strahaven Computers after their hols

i did download Parted Magic see above post...but now my DVD writer wont work

:(.....so progress = zilch......:thumbsdown:

very high winds ATM but nowhere like Tuesday at 100+mph here

power is back ON - something we take for granted till it isn't...:lol:
 
PARTIAL SUCCESS

i visited A Computer Shop today in Rutherglen...the disc wasn't spinning

they opened the case and found the drive had shifted/moved down about 2mm

and wasn't making contact with the pins............prob got a bump by Royal Mail

rectified and formatted to NTFS [he said]....and F.O.C. too........:thumbs:

HOME..........plugged in - and got this

so - there is disk 1............:clap:
but ?? why does it show File System = RAW and no Drive letter

if I right click bottom pane to format to NTFS .. it says

''cannot format as Volume 'off-line'
Assign a Drive letter or path to the Volume''


what now.??............I've not tried anything in case i lose the drive again..:lol:
 
Give it a drive letter and Bob's yer Aunty!
 
I think you need to Initialise it first. Then format, then assign a drive letter - assuming the assign drive letter doesn't work.

the ''initialise'' option i used to see under 'Disk management' no longer appears

have to unplug the internet dongle...:bang: as for some reason the HDD wont work in the other usb slot

back in 2 ticks..........................................

selected ''G''

the volume changed to ''backup (G)''

the RAW changed to ''NTFS''


a pat on the back to all .:thumbs: - thanks for the help..:woot:

now - finally - back-up my images..................:lol:

well it does now.............:shrug:

all safely backed up

so can now keep one of the HDDs off-site
