How to examine a lens

I'll be looking at some used lenses soon (maybe 17-55mm, 80-200mm / 70-200mm Nikon, etc.) and would like to be sure that the glass is good, along with functions. Can anyone offer any tips/advice on how to check over the lenses (especially coatings, etc.)?

I've used good glass before on film cameras, but its been a while since I had my hands on any lenses like those above. I'm wanting to upgrade and get good glass to use with my DX.

I just trust my eyes, have a good look at it and through it. get a couple of shots and examine those. Be sure there are no Fungus, dents, scratches on the glass. Not sure how to check on the conditions of any coatings.

Always check manual focus. I had a problem on my 17-55 with the focus ring not engaging but noticed it too late as I'm always on AF. Check the metal attachments to the camera for significant wear and take a look at the filter threads. Screw ona filter to check for smoothness. I wouldn't know how to check coatings. Good luck!

The only used lenses I buy are off MPB now really, and I trust their judgement with their 'rating'.

Matt told me they thoroughly check each lens, cosmetically and optically, so I have faith that my 50mm 1.8D that arrives tomorrow is really in Exc++ condition ;)
