hoya r72 vs cheap IR filters

Does the Hoya variety has coatings etc to allow better IR transmission compared with the much cheaper varieties found on Gaybay?

I can't find any MRC information on the IR filters by Hoya. As the price difference is HUGE betweem the Hoya and the unbranded ones, I am question if there is any validations to go with Hoya especially I just want to take occasional IR photos.

you might as well start cheap. All common lenses are optimised for visible light and at IR strange things start to happen.
IR modded sensor in cheap old dSLR might be better, but first try out the cheap version. You might not even get into it

that would depend how used you are at opening cameras working cleanly and carefully. I'd make sure you have all required fancy screwdrivers and find completely dust free environment before you start
 
i guess DIY is out of question as I have never taken a camera apart. So anyone can point me to the direction of whom can carry out such work?
 
Depending on the cost you could pick up a second hand d70 they had very weak IR filters and didn't need a mod. I used one for a while and it was fine.
 
ah, fair enough, i will stick with my D90 and a tripod then. I wanted to see if I can do without tripod...

nvm ordered a cheap IR filter to play with and see the result
