What're the first things I absolutely *must* do?
Any particular apps I need to get?
Tweaks?

Ive no idea how to even *get* apps! (Im a mac user btw)

/puts the iphone in the proverbial sock drawer....

First thing to do is not like it so you can sell it to me at a knocked down price ;)

Um...

barcode scanner, get that and downloading apps is loads easier.
you'll have to navigate to Android Market on your phone, do a search for barcode scanner and install it.
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/shopping/barcode-scanner_clh.html

Now you can download and install apps from anywhere that supplies a barcode link, you don't need to navigate everywhere on your phone, you can do it on your pc and read the barcodes from the screen.

topical 1st app = Snowflake Live Wallpaper

Make sure you download 3G watchdog - keeps tabs on your download limits and warns you when you get close to it.

Another note - "In settings - accounts & sync" turn of background data when not using market,. Having this ticket eats into the battery life

Running live wallpaper shortens the battery life.

Other worthwhile apps to download-
Angry birds - addictive game
gauge battery widget - clearer way off watching battery power
Handcent SMS - better than stock messaging
Palmary weather - Excellent weather app
Picsaypro - Great photo editing app

Have a look here too

Look for a free app called Metro QR it reads these square barcodes

Wifi Anylyser is a great toy.

I run a Motorola Milestone on Droid. By far the best phone I've ever owned. I like the Iphones but the droid HTC's and my Rola are superb.

3g Watchdog to keep an eye on any download limits
PicSayPro [paid for but worth every one of the 269pennies, also a free version with less options available] for photo editing
Juice Defender to keep an eye on battery useage and keep everuthing in check.

TIP: Turn off GPS unless you actually need to use it.

TIP 2: Apps are available via 'Market' on your phone....

K Downloaded most of my usual apps now..Found the market just after I posted this :$

Turrned off background thingy too, cheers.
Downloading 3G thingy and Juice defender too
Just about to look for task killer, although Im sure I read there was a problem with that in that it could end up using 100% cpu?
And also that a task killer shouldn't be necessary?

I have heard that task killer can have compatibility issues. I tried it but didn't like it.
I now have system panel lite which seems to work better on the HTC Desire.
