I need to ask a favour. I have recorded a few clips with an anamorphic lens and I’m not sure which “de-squeeze” looks more natural?

which “de-squeeze” looks more natural A or B?

Can you take a picture with an ordinary lens and see how things look?

It's a fair question but which ordinary lens? This video is a 65mm with a projector lens mounted in front of it. So I could take an image with a 65mm but the anamorphic factor effectively changes the film format, sort of an extreme crop factor but in reverse. I could use the 65mm on its own or a short lens reflecting the "effective" full frame focal length but there are two de-squeeze factors so I would need the 65mm divided by both de-squeeze and then take two pics. A 35mm might be close or a 45mm but then the question would be which ordinary lens looks more natural? Might still be worth a try however.
 
I have been looking at getting that lens the new auto focus version, so well interested. May be we could get a better idea if panning against a one position was shown with zoom in/out. also subject matter could make a huge difference. I notice the run time is very jerky watching the red line under your clips

Then don't take a picture (and BTW it's distance to the subject not focal length which will matter), just look at the scene by eye and see if you can tell which is more accurate. Looking at the street sign and that post with the"H" on it there are difference so as long as you stand in the same spot you should be able to see which stretch is more accurate... or you could take a picture with something round in the frame, a "Celebrations" or similar chocolate tub might do and might help you to see at what stretch you lose the distortion.

I'm not sure what you mean? Needless to say YT compression is no ones friend.

Technical considerations aside which ofvthe two clips looks more natural or even which do people prefer?

I think they're just too similar to make a preferential choice. The only difference I can see is the degree of stretch on the two signs. I can't say either is preferrable and I can't say with any certainty which is the most accurate, all I can say is that one shows more distortion than the other.

If you want accuracy you're going to have to shoot a scene which will allow you to see when you've applied the right corrections. I suggested a round item but a square one will do... just something to allow you to judge when you've achieved accuracy.

Good luck with this but it should be an easy thing to sort out if you have something known and predictable in the scene.

Thank you for that I realised too late I should have had a third choice of neither or similar option. A draw in effect.

When looking at a still image what looks natural isn't really a question only if the viewer believes it does, or does not depending on what one is going for.
 
sorry MVC just returned to subject. I was looking at the - SIRUI 20mm T1.8 1.33X S35 Frame Autofocus Anamorphic Lens- on the Ppansonic G9ii camera

I do have a voigtlander Vito CL I was given for my 21st birthday way back in around 1966 and hardly used, still in perfect working condition with leather case.Hardly used due to film costs
the clockwork timer still works as does the top light meter. Often thought of selling but a bit sentimental over it. also the electronic flash gun still works
