I've had a 10GB drive on a 486, with it being a laptop though i'm not sure if it would work with a standard 3.5in IDE drive

edit: out of curiosity what are you using it for?

Only you'll really know if your BIOS will be able to see it or not by testing it.

My old Dell 486 desktop had no problem with a pair of 6.4GB Quantum Bigfoot hard drives in it.

Plug it in and see. May or may not work...good luck finding a BIOS update though ;)

What is it for? You can get p2-3 based laptops for nothing these days that are much more useful!

I've got a box of old laptop HDD's knocking around in my loft ... I'll have a looksee when I get home tonight if you would prefer to replace like with like?

You have to run it in LBA mode if it's over 2GB, if I remember right.

Got an old 486 laptop I use as a console for my server. Think the hard disc in it is around 40Mb

Do you need the hard disc, or could you get away with just running everything off a floppy disc? :D. At least if you just want to run DOS only.
