Idiots Guide to Sony A7R/S/2 & Using Canon Lenses with an Adapter

Hi All,

I'd appreciate a brief explanation as to the main differences between the Sony full frame bodies and also how well Canon lenses work with adapters like the Metabones, AF, IS, etc. I appreciate the bodies have in body IS but how does that work with Canon IS lenses or do you turn it off in camera? I'm interested mainly in landscape and using my existing Canon glass. Apologies if this has been asked before but all I could find in the search was the A7 thread and at 150+ pages the answers weren't obvious.

I don't use Canon lenses but owenb has just bought an A7II and is using Canon lenses via a Metabones adapter and he seems quite pleased. He posts in the thread I linked to. Maybe he'll look in here or maybe you could PM him and ask him to take a look in here and post his thoughts?
 
Don't use IBIS and in-lens stabilisation at the same time -- they can end up fighting each other and being worse than useless. Use whichever you find is the best.
 
Use Ibis as then you're stabilised for all lenses, if you turn ibis to use with an octicslly stabilised lens then you have to turn Ibis back on when you change lenses- ie more button pushes and more hassle

With Sony e lenses the 2 systems will compliment each other

As for focus with canon lenses- only the a7ii and a7rii will do it
 
Also only the mk2 bodies have in body stabilisation

And differentiation between models is really easy

A7 original, won't focus canon lenses, it is the cheapest
A7s, great high ISO, only 12mp
A7r, 36mp

A7ii an overall well balanced camera with better grip, Ibis and will focus canon lenses, iq same as a7
A7sii, in same as a7s but with Ibis and better grip
A7rii, highest resolution but highest price

I'd say the a7ii or a7rii is where it's at for you

Not a usable solution, slow as hell and frequently totally inaccurate- better to manual focus than use focus on those bodies

But it does focus and that's the point. Accuracy is fine. Speed is slow.

I wouldn't trust it. Besides if he's shooting landscapes he can just use manual focus. I think the a7ii is worth the upgrade, ibis is very useful and the body just feels better, and of curse you get proper quick focus with canon lenses
Wouldn't get the a7r unless you had a specific need for 36mp and 24 wasn't enough

I only got my a7 ii yesterday ( have a look in the owners thread to see my initial thoughts etc) I use a metabones iv and sony a7 ii it was pants until I updated the firmware on the a7 ii followed by the metabones I'm still getting to grips with the camera if I'm honest but I have took probably 15 to 20 portraits and test shots of my dog with it, I'm totally shocked how good it is I used face detection for the portraits and was totally sold on it the dr is ridiculous compared to the canon I don't shoot fast moving stuff so I wouldn't say autofocus is a massive part of what I do, however it locks on fast enough for me and to capture a dog which is quite fast.......

I turned the phase detection off and it is a lot less impressive with the contrast dete4ction being used but you mention landscapes so cant see it being a issue no matter what body you go for really


also I tried manual focus with the evf and focus peaking I cant see how you would ever miss a shot
