If I already have a Canon 50mm 1.4...

I've read a few reports of the 40mm 2.8 STM being slow to focus.
 
I've seen some great images posted on POTN with the 40mm. Having just bought a 50mm 1.4, I've thought about the 40mm, but in the same boat as you, just not sure what I'd get additionally from it, other than it's nice and compact when you're out and about....
 
I've got the best of both worlds. I've got a 35 f2, a 50 f1.4 and the wife has a 40 f2.8 STM for her 650D so I occasionally borrow her lens when I want that something different. The 40 was a bit slow focussing when on my 5D3, but I updated the firmware and it seems to have improved the speed quite a bit. On the 7D there does seem to be quite a bit of FOV difference between the 40 and 50. The 40 is nice and sharp though and would quite happily use it if I didn't have the 50.

I own both. For not much money you'll gain a lovely little sharp lens that has nice colour and contrast and very pleasant OOF transition and blur. It's a nice walk around on ASP-C as it isn't as zoomed in as a 50mm but gives you a nicer perspective when shooting people than a 30mm lens.

Mine still makes me smile every time I mount it to the camera body. It is still new to me but I can't see that wearing off anytime soon.
 
I found the 40 length on crop much more useful than 50 and as a walkabout prime was better although agree that a 28 or 35 may be better still.
