Ignoring price, is the 7D or the 5D mk II a better all round camera?

Hi all,

Ok heres my situation. I have an eos450D, ive owned it for about two years, and feel fairly confident on it now, and pretty sure ive gone as far as i can with it, so im looking for an upgrade.

I do a large amount of watersprts in the summer, of which we make alot of videos. We have managed with GoPros so far, but want to upgrade to at least one main camera, so video is as important as stills.

Type of video i will be shooting is fast paced watersport mostly, on an apsc around a 70mm lens on.

Stills is anything from wild life to portraits to sport, and alot of travel, i do carry the camera alot, but im a fairly big guy so weight isnt a deciding factor for me.

Below i have listed the points i can think of as advantages for each camera.

I do alot of outdoor shooting - 7D has better waterproofing
Full frame for stills obviously goes towards 5D
APS-C sensor is easier to focus with in video mode? -7D
Better frame rates on the 7D
Being able to effectively shoot slow mo on the 7D
7D 8fps burst mode on stills.

So, any input? I will spend the money on the 5D if its the better all round camera for my needs. Im also looking at using these bodys with an 24-105 L series lens.

Considering what you're wanting to use it for, the 7D seems the obvious choice to me. Yes, ultimately the 5D has higher quality still image output, but for action photography, the 7D is a better option, primarily because of the faster shooting speed and more modern AF system. I believe video is better implemented on the 7D as well.

Unless, of course, you want to opt for the 5D Mark III.

I guessed that was the way i was leaning, as log as i wasnt missing something out.

The only concern with the 7D is the overheating?

For portraits ➝ 5D MKII {& it's full frame!}
For high speed {such as you've described in your original post} ➝ Canon 7D

Entirely depends on what you use your body to shoot I guess!

but best option as an all-rounder I reckon would be to save up for a 5D3 which IMHO succeeds in plugging all the gaps Canon did not address with the 5D2. Don't get me wrong, the 5D2 is a great camera. It's just not an all rounder. Neither is the 7D.

I'm sure it's a nice camera and I have and am going to keep a DSLR but most of my photography at the moment and probably in the future will be with smaller cameras and I can't see myself buying another DSLR unless mine stops working.
 
Didn't mean it literally :} I shan't be upgrading ~ can't afford to & have no need to! Quality of the photographs produced by the 5D MKIII is beautiful tho.
