I'm in a right pickle!

Firstly, this could be the most pointless thread ever!

Ok, thought I would post here for some advice after already asking my family and real life photography friends. Here is the situation....

Decided I really loved the look/feel of the Nikon DF that much, I would swap my Canon setup for one (eventually two) as I am getting more bookings for couples shoots and some wedding enquiries. They would be my two camera setup with 35 F1.4 and 85 F1.4 with the option of adding a 24 later.

I had considered going with a twin Fuji set up as I really do love my X-Pro 1 but decided against that. I figured the Nikon would scratch my personal love of retro itch as well as being able to get the pro jobs done, especially having read Guy (radiohead's) reviews on them for shooting weddings. This is where things have get tricky.....

I have sold the Fuji 35mm so now have a body I can't do anything with and need to sell. I have aquired the Nikon 85mm F1.4G in a deal on the Fuji lens but have no camera to use it on. I still have the 5D III + 35mm F1.4L + 85mm F1.2L. The lenses had some interest before I pulled the for sale thread but nothing solid. Now I am having reservations because i do love the 5D + 85mm combination.

I know this is all very GAS related and as someone wanting to do weddings I am sure some people will say, they are just tools, get what does the job best.

So, which do I sell now as at the moment, I don't risk losing too much money.

Sell the Fuji and the Nikon Lens

Keep the canon kit - if you love it and get great shots with it, why change systems ? - the important thing with weddings is to have faith in your kit and know it backwards - you don't want to be wondring how you do x,y, z on a system you've never used as the bride is walking down the aisle

Thanks for your to the point advice. The Canon is more a tool where the Fuji is a "love the camera" kind of camera. That's where I was hoping the Df would be both. Hobby is still a big part of photography for me. As for learning the controls, I am sure after a week the the Nikon it would be as second nature to me as the Canon is now.
 
so sell the fuji - keep the nikon lens and get a nikon df as a play camera - keep the canon for work

see how it goes with the DF if you like it and get good shots with it then in six months or so sell the canon kit and change

Also considered that! Thing is, I haven't endless pots of money unfortunately. But this is the option that seems to be winning at the moment. The only drawback, if I come to sell the Df, that's when i will lose a fair whack of cash. Either way, the Fuji has to go! It's not had much interest in the for sale section but it has only been three days.

This seems to be the best option to me. There is no harm in liking the gear you use at all, if you get pleasure from using it then you are more likely a) to use it and b) be in a better frame of mind to get great pics. Just my 2p :)
 
Have you ever used a DF ? - if not it might be worth hiring one for a weekend first - you might hate it , in which case its as well to find that out before you buy
 
Keep the Canon kit, it's working well for you. I predict a serious case of switcher's remorse if you did go down the Nikon path, could be a costly exercise and the novelty would wear off quickly.
 
Sell the lot and start again, gave me a headache just reading about all the permutations so can only imagine how much your bonce must hurt.

Thanks for the opinion. I agree, liking your kit is a big part of it IMO.

Good point. Will have to try and have an extemded play with one somehow.

This is the reason I am struggling. Had this remorse previously and don't need it again!

5D mk3 is one of the best cameras canon make. The 85mm f1.2 is always argued as one of the best lenses for portraits

I think you need more Canon lenses :)
 
try a df if you can, its pointless lack of video annoys me, and film is better for a play camera anyways

:lol: Maybe I do. The 5D + 85mm is beautiful. This Nikon 85mm is also beautiful too. Perhaps Canon will eventually release something DF looking?

To be honest, I see video on my DSLR as pointless. I have played with it once and since then have had no need for it. I know it has become the norm though and people see it's inclusion as pretty standard now.
 
Keep the Canon setup for the moment & the Nikon lens,keep trying to sell the Fuji body.

When the Fuji sell and you save a bit more go for an Nikon Df as and when money become available,then see if you want to go full Nikon :)

Fadi has possibly solved me predicament by agreeing to swap back the Nikon for the Fuji. Such a nice chap for even suggesting it. Good grief. This has cost me some more stupidity tax. More frustrating than impatience tax!
 
I'm a Nikon man when it comes to SLRs but recently chopped in a D800 body against an X-Pro1 kit which has renewed my love for photography and may have also bought an XT-1 for the SLR feel, much improved AF and several other things which escape me momentarily! I did consider the Df but decided that the D700 I still have does all I want it to and the Df is just way too expensive for what it is.

I've been doing so well controlling my GAS recently, then I had a play with the Fujis and fell in love! Beware the foolish fondle, it can lead to a more serious affair...
 
I would keep the Canon. The Fuji is a little gem and is different from a Dslr, but I don't think it is a choice for wedding photography, I am not debating the quality before it starts, I have seen images side by side in comparison and I know which just has the edge.
Learn to love your Canon all over again and get shooting, your images are lovely at the moment so your on a winner. Dismiss thoughts of new gear and enjoy your photography. If at a later date you start thinking about new toys, try to find someone who has got what you like and see if your can use it, you might find it's nothing like you expected, that's what I do.
 
Very much. I didn't want to, but I did. Went in one shop and played a while with the silver one. Then passed another shop and they had a black one so would have been rude not to. The focus points aren't an issue IMO. Weight and control were lovely and after a couple of days would be second nature I imagine. The ONLY thing stopping me now is the people I've messed around in the for sale section and the Canon 85mm F1.2 which is so amazing.
 
Stop worrying about what other people might think and do whatever is right for you.

I got panned by a couple of people for using the Df last week elsewhere. I pointed out that Fer Juaristi and Nordica are both now using the Df and they shut up. Idiots.

I'd discovered Fer Juaristi's work the other day. It's beautiful IMO. I do worry about messing people around though as I wouldn't like it done to me. Been out with the Fuji today and it's just not seeing as much use as it deserves to be honest. I don't want to end up stuck with the body though!
