Imac won't turn on

I had to turn my imac off with the power button a couple of days ago as when it started up it refused to sleep or shutdown. It has become more temperamental with force quit hanging the entire desktop (have to use kill in terminal to kill anything) Now it won't power on at all with the button :( I'm at my wit's end as this has been the week from hell with 2 boiler failures, my phone has stopped working properly, my laptop is playing up too and now the desktop has died. It was also refusing to recognise the ethernet cable was plugged in. I unplugged it from the mains to add a ups to replace one that died before. Now it won't turn on.

My only hope is that it will wake up anyway at 9am tomorrow as I have usually had it set to do that so it has been coming out of sleep. Didn't realise it could do it when switched off so I am wondering if that has upset it somehow??

It is 7 but I can't afford to replace it unless I get finance which I don't want to do.

Any ideas on simple things to try? I can only replace the 10 amp (seems a lot) cartridge fuse in the plug and hope that is why. Is there another way of making them come on without the power button? (daft question I realise :bonk: )
 
Try this.

Remove the power cable for 10 minutes. After that hold the power button in whilst you attach the power cable again. Keep the power button pressed for a few more seconds.

If that doesn't work try holding down alt cmd P and R whilst you press the power button. If it starts, keep holding them down until you hear the startup chime 2 times.

If all that fails it sounds as if your power supply has packed up.

I'll try those. The pram reset is really awkward as you have to be a virtual octopus :)

I'll change the fuse first I think just to rule it out.
 
I've stuck a new 5 amp fuse in the plug. 10 amp seems daft to me anyway! No joy. Hopefully it will come on of its own accord in either 9 hours time or at 9am tomorrow!

It's done it before I think but I can't remember how or why or how I fixed it. Might have just waited for it to come on. I was going to turn that off but glad I didn't!

I've left the ethernet unplugged and it should get wifi instead. I think it's too old to be afflicted by the same problem as an MBP. Ethernet has up until now been faultless so I think it is more likely to be a duff cable or the internal NIC is failing.

It's just gone bong and started up but seems to be running the fans full tilt and not getting beyond the apple logo... er??? I've left it for a short while to see if it will get beyond there. I can't hear it trying to access the HD. It's just sitting on the grey apple logo without the segments whizzing round. Hmmm.

It turns on but it won't boot. Tried holding down c key with cdrom in drive. Won't boot off that either. Tried D for hd. Doesn't seem to want to do anything :-(
 
I have done that already. I'll have another go though. I asked on the apple forum and they suggested as it won't go passed that screen and you can't boot it from cd the logic board has probably failed :(
