Import Duty & VAT for Used lenses?

No
I am thinking of purchasing some used Canon lenses off of ebay from a Japan based seller.

I assume that the standard 6.7% Duty applies, but that VAT will not be charged due to the equipment being used. Can anyone confirm?

And from memory the VAT will be applied after the duty, so you pay 20% on the 6.7%* as well.. near enough 28% on top of the list price, plus any handling charge from the shipper/RM.

I have imported used lenses from Japan, it can be worthwhile even after VAT and duty - but factor those into your decision.

*I haven't checked this figure, just assumed that the number you've quoted is correct.

It's even worse than that as you pay duty on the postage fees as well as the item value, then VAT on top of the lot (plus, as you say, any courier fees) :(

Yup, as most peeps are alluding to, factor in a 1/3 uplift on the total price you'll pay, and you're just about there.

I do buy some rare a mount minolta lenses from Japan and had 3 come in with almost no customs charge and then got hit this weekend :(. Still it should be a very nice lens :D
