just playing around last night and took these using the canon 400D with the EFS18-55mm bit blurry but not to bad i think for a very first attempt at close up stuff:LOL:

On the flower itself you need more depth of field, to bring more of it into focus. You need to watch out for background clutter too, that's where I always mess up.
 
Not brilliant I am afraid, I agree with Steeps about the background clutter as well.

Go try again with a cleaner background, and more natural light :)
 
Put it on a tabletop (with table cloth) next to a window and compose yourself & camera to kickout the clutter (as has been said).

Otherwise, yes it is a good shot for a 1st time .. and well done for taking the courage to post this.

And a happy birthday to the Ms.
