I had a conversation today with Photoguard on the phone. The question was about the proof of ownership of the items. They apparently are happy with original receipts, or ebay+paypal bills, but anything bought as a personal deal / cash /, for example from classifieds here would seem to cause problems. Both of my bodies were acquired this way. How do members here get around the problem?
Would anyone say that insuring 1DsII for the 'full' £5300 like for like (1Dx) is a good plan, or use £3k (5DIII), or anything else? 1DIII (no real need for sports body in my lineup)?

Should I look at another company, and would you suggest I go through the hell back to FOCUS tomorrow (speak face to face, discounts if any)? I know I should have done this on Sunday :bang:

P.S. Would anyone say that indemnity cover for selling prints through the website (fulfilled by pro labs) is of any use?

I use Imaging Insurance.

http://www.imaginginsurance.co.uk/

They don't ask for prove of purchase, instead they give you a quote for the amount you want to insured etc.

So if your gear add up to 5k, you just tell them you want to insured up to 5k.

Thanks, I will give them a call. The need for proofs only came alight when I phoned photoguard - that is only if I ever wanted to claim from them!

You can bet if you put a claim in they want to see receipts then

Not sure about that, my pro friend uses them and he buy everything second hand, alot of them is private buy so i they might not.

They charge a little higher then other company i quoted but it save a lot of hassle.

Not everyone have proof of purchase for everything they own, what if my house got burn down and lots of document is gone.

Their must be a way round it. I rang up and told them i want to insured 5k worth of gear and they told me thats the cost they to pay me up to if i ever need a claim.

I have spoken to Photoguard twice about this issue ( on phone and in person) and they have reassured me that a photo of me and the item, including registering the serials on their site would suffice as proof.

Problem is people lose receipts I have boxes for all my kit but only have receipts for half of my stuff.

thats why is important to find a decent company that don't have to go through a whole of a hassle when claiming/dealing with them.

Some company will charge you abit higher on your insurance so you and them don't have to go through this problem. The higher the overall value the more money you will paid and also they will ask if you got any single item worth over £1500 and you have to declare that as well.

I got no proof of purchase for any of my item except the camera body and lens register on the nikon site. Also my dad gave me 2 top quality manual lens that from 30 years ago, i don;t think i got proof of purchase for that.

So i don't think receipt or proof will do anyone justice since many people buy use or private buy these days.

whilst it cannot be 100% the same this is from the FAQs of Musicguard.

You only need to prove ownership in the event of a claim. Whilst receipts are the best 'proof' we will also accept any other evidence which clearly demonstrates ownership such as instruction manuals, packaging and photographs clearly showing the items make and model. Alternatively bank or credit card statements can be provided and on some occasions the retailer may be able to provide a copy receipt for larger purchases.

and this from Photoguard

4) What information do you need to start cover?
We need your name, contact details, date of birth, payment details and the make and model of each item you would like to cover. Whilst we don't require the serial number to complete an application, you will need to provide this for items over £250 or £750 if you are covered on our Photoguard PRO policy in the event of a claim.

Look like is good idea to compile a list of equipment own with make, model and serial number for reference. Then take photo for each item for future reference.

Right, the quote from imaging ins came to 355 (may change slightly once updated). It is a lot, do you think it is bad?

btw. Is 1DsII --> 5DIII like for like? Same for 1DIII (so £6k instead of £10.6k)? I could argue that it is a direct upgrade for me in terms of functionality, but SHOULD I?

depend how you declaring the value. They only paid up to the value you declare and insure for.

Alot of good reviewing on imaging insurance. Good to deal with on claiming.
