Can anyone recommend an inverter so I can use it to power a laptop and charge batteries by plugging it into the cigarette lighter. Ideally it should have two sockets in it.

Thanks

Maplins  don#t know how much it was as it was in a friends car but lpatop or ps2 worked ok and his gf could use the hairdryer in the morning while camping so loved it :D

I think you may need to be very careful with this one. Most cheaper units are modified sine wave output and in some cases this could damage the laptop. I think you may need to go with a PURE SINE WAVE inverter, they are more expensive but will give you a supply the same as household electric, smoother and more regular, the cheaper modified sine versions produce hard edge power that is ok for a light bulb or kettle but not for audio or more delicate things.

I ended up getting a pure sine generator to power my studio lighting outside, this is a very large item and not what you are looking for but I think if you do a google search for PURE SINE INVERTER you will fine a few around from about £65 up.

Why don't you purchase a laptop travel power adaptor? The ones that have various adaptor plugs to suit different laptops and can also be used on planes etc.

Adrian, if you buy one could you pm me the details? I'm after an inverter as well!

As Andrew, V8burble, said you are better off buying a car 12v adapter to laptop adapter.

I will look into that but the advantage of an inverter means I can charge my camera batteries as well

If I go down that route will do, the PURE SINE WAVE ones are a bit more than I was planning on spending but there does not seem to be anything between between the cheap ones and them

most ebay chargers come with a fag lighter plug too, and are cheap. laptop + camera chargers will likely cost you less than an inverter.

Totally agree, you are paying big money to create AC just to then convert it back to DC  And they are bigger/less convenient than little power adaptors.

I have a 150 watt inverter in my van with i us to run my laptop or i can charge up my camera batteries or radio scanner batteries so as you can see an inverter is quite usefull

Yep, an inverter is very useful - a friend in my caving club has been using one for years to charge phones, cameras, gps's, drills and caving lamps when we've been away in the mountains around Europe and haven't had the luxury of a generator; it's far more useful than having to source multiple cigarette lighter fittings for all the various bits of electronics you need day in day out.
