iPad 2 resizing uploaded photos

Just a general question please.....when you upload photos to an iPad 2 tablet do they have to be a certain pixel size or do they resize automatically, also please can you only upload jpegs or will tiffs and RAW images be OK

When I upload to my iPad 1 using the camera connector kit it does an auto resize to display them but stores the original RAW files

I have a Lightroom Export preset that resizes the long side to 2048 pixels and exports as jpeg. That cuts the file size down substantially, and leaves room for a 2x zoom.
