I just got myself a 32gb wifi iPad 2 and was wondering how it can be used for photography, I've seen it being used to get photos from camera and view them, but anyone have any experience here??
 
Numerous threads on apps etc for the iPad here - have a quick search and you'll see the same ones coming up all the time which can be used for post pro etc
 
You can use the apple camera connection kit, for use with SD cards or USB, then import them into photos. From there you can edit in whatever program you wish..

Filterstorm is meant to be good, also snapseed..

i use the Apple connection kit to transfer over from my 7D to my iPad 1 64Gb. Comes in very handy whilst out and about as an extra bit of storage and larger screen to view on but not sure i would use it for anything more than that personally.
 
Unfortunately I couldn't find any other threads, so I will then have to buy a USB connection kit, can I then use a card reader to read the CF card? Or does it have to be direct camera connection?

I bought the USB connection kit and a cheap CF card reader, that allows me to view RAW images on the iPad (1st Gen), without any problems.

Buy the genuine Apple kit, I wasted a tenner on one of the Ebay versions and all it does (eventually) is throw up an error message saying that it's not compatible :bang:

Thanks very much that's what I was looking to see if raw is viewable with the CF reader, now this will allow me a nicer workflow I can shoot and see the images quickly!

I have the 32gb iPad 2 and the camera connection kit, and I use a nikon d700.
I mainly bought the iPad as a portfolio and as a backup drive for while I am out shooting.

Having seen the power of it though I started to think about editing.
The photoshop app is rubbish, don't waste your time. It's ok for pics off a camera phone, but just gets confused by any quality or high res.

I bought photo gene and upgraded to the pro version. It's a fantastic app and is really fast. Pretty much like using Lightroom on an iPad. And exports images to a huge range of places without losing quality.
Depending on how much you use photoshop, it's also worth keeping an eye on the adobe touch apps. They are pretty lacking at the moment, but the theory shows promise.

Check out snapseed. It's quite new and getting some very good reviews. I think dpreview and Scott kelby have recent commentary as well. I've just started to use it. The selective editing functionality is brilliant.
 
Is there anyway to use the iPad purely as a larger screen for reviewing images on the camera etc?

I wouldn't want to download them from the card, but think it could be useful for checking sharpness etc and to show models/subjects images rather than using the screen.

I've seen vieos of portable DVD players being used in this way, but nothing with an iPad.

You could use an EyeFi SD card in an adapter and ShutterSnitch set it to just transmit basic jpegs to the ipad

With a bit more effort, using dslr camera remote, you can wirelessly and remotely trigger, focus and change your camera settings, as well as review the pictures.

I've never seen or used this app, just read about it, and thought I'd share....

Thanks, though it looks like it does so much more it could be using a sledgehammer to crack a nutshell it does what I had in mind. One of the reasons why I wasn;t prepared to shell out for an iPad was that it would be too frustrating not to be able to hook it up to a camera and use it as a review screen.

That's an idea that might work with my D3 with it's two card slots. Raw on one card, EyeFi card in another ,streaming low res images for review only.

It's not a cheap option, especially when you add £20 or so for the adaptor. Can't beleive they haven't come out with a CF version yet. I'd have though pros using CF card bodies would be a real market for them.

Surely it's not long until wireless n wifi is included in camera bodies. It's standard on all mobile phones now plus a load of other consumer devices, and it would have a bunch of uses for photographers.

Anyway, back to ipad workflow.....

What I REALLY want to be able to do, is load on (a bit at a time) my back catalog of 10,000 pics so I can keyword, flag, tag and mark em for delete. These are the photos I had before I got lightroom that are an organisational mess. The reason for wanting them on the ipad is simple - it's a massive task - so I want to do a bit each day while on the train to work, or sat on the couch in the evening etc etc. Then, finally, I will have all my photo sorted properly for the first time in my life :thumbs:

This is why I've been following an app called Photosmith. It can do the keywording/tagging right now and sync with LR, but you can't load on pics from LR yet (only from a card). They say they're working on adding this functionality, and if they do, I'm buying it.

I would guess that now it's hit the market, developers will be working on equivalent apps for other photo programs.

You'd think so, but from what I've read they have no intention of producing a CF version, as they see their market as being mainly in the consumer, rather than pro, arena.

At least with the D3 or D300 you can utilise one of the adapters, the D700 seemingly has a slightly narrower card slot which precludes the use of most of the sd->cf versions currently on the market.
