iphone 4 vs compact camera

hey all, long time since I've been on here :')

anyways lately I've been getting fed up of carrying my DSLR around with me and I may have made a few threads on how the mirrorless cameras fair up to DSLR standards but anyways I have a new idea.

It all started when I was out with my mate and my girlfriend and it was about 7:20 and looking at a nearby pylon I saw it silhouetted against a twilight blue background and I really wanted to get a picture of it but the camera on my phone is shocking and I didn't have my DSLR on me at the time. This is when I started thinking about a compact camera and noticing that some amazing quality images that come from the iPhone 3GS/4 I realised that I would love one, however I also realised that it comes with a £350-£500 price tag which seems stupid just so I can use the camera and selection of apps. I am planning on getting a android tablet so the multitude of lomo apps etc will be available to me so it really would mean buying an iPhone for the camera alone.

anyways this got me wondering about what sort of compact camera would fair up to the iPhone camera. I'm guessing the iPhone camera can't be that great but what would it be equal to in the compact arena? could it be as simple as a nikon L24 or as complex as a Canon s95? what do you think? like I say it's only for nice photos that will 99% be printed as 6x4/8x6 prints and the odd A4.
 
I love the iPhone camera. I only have the 4 and not the 4s. Apple have really gone to town on the new 4S, they have put a decent lens system in place and put a higher sensor in. I do love my SLR, but i know what you mean about having something small available to take a good photo. The only downside with the iPhone camera is that you do need a good deal of light to get a good picture, and the flash isnt that good, but then its a mobile phone.

plus one for the iPhone 4 camera - I love mine, its really good quality.
 
ohhhh... lol well if thats the case, then any compact will do. Essentially you have a run of the mill 5mp camera which any compact beats. Tesco had a Fuji in there the other day for a little over £30. It was a 12 Megapixel camera that takes AA batteries, something like that will do.

Whats your budget?

budget is anything upto £200 or even £300 if I sell my DSLR, I'm happy as long as it's a nice compact piece of kit that I can use to take photos anywhere and then edit them on my laptop later or put them through some lo-mo apps etc on my new android tablet once I get one :)
 
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend an S95 / S100 as I love my S90 - easy access manual controls are such a boon for a compact camera, especially if you're coming from a DSLR.

That said, I think there have been a few high end compact releases recently which I'm not up to date on so worth checking for.
 
I've been using my phone recently but it needs good light otherwise noise rules and if the highlights blow out soooo easily.

Unless things have moved on and got a lot better I think that a LX5 type camera makes more sense for anyone interested in photography.

the only problem I find with the Canon s90/s95 or Lumix LX5 is the price, for the same price I could get a mirrorless camera that would be much better, I'm tempted for a Lumix LX3 second hand for under £200 or even a Fujifilm F500 EXR for £200 at Jessops brand new. Noise doesn't bother me tbf as long as it's not extremely hefty that it looks more like a webcam photo than a perfectly exposed compact photo :)

Obviously Canon S95/S100 are waaaay superior to iPhone so therefore they are not equivalent.

BUT he said he had £300 budget :shrug:

You can better an iphone with any dedicated camera at pocket money prices.

Coming from a DSLR, easy manual controls are well worth paying for IMO and with that you get excellent IQ so if you have a budget of £300 then why not?

Yes, CSC offer better IQ but with a zoom lens I think they're bigger, probably bigger with just a prime. A used LX might be an idea. I had an LX3 and TBH I think that it took sharper pictures than the LX5 that replaced it.
 
yeah the only thing that puts me off it that I'll end up treating the CSC the same way as I do my DSLR and only take it about in my rucksack so it would defeat the object of my having a compacter camera anyway, yeah I think I'm just gonna go for an LX3 :)
