have just purchased a 1.4x canon teleconvertor version 2, i have noticed an odd characteristic,

on my 1dmk2 with the 100-400 on it makes funny noises when auto focussing if the IS is on, turn the is off and it works fine

is this normal ?

It's normal to hear the gyro's and correction motors when they're activated.

That's strange, I can hear the correction mechanism on all my IS lenses.
On thing that's unusual with the 100-400 is that the IS group is positioned at the front of the lens....all later lens IS groups are towards the back of the lens where the correction requires smaller movements. The extender shouldn't make too much difference other than physically moving the sensors further forwards and hence them being subjected to greater movement.

With my 100-400 and 70-200 there is no change in IS noise between TC on or TC off, Maybe you are just more sensitive to it because you have the new TC attached.
