IS and tripods

I've found with both my lenses that if I leave IS turned on whilst on a tripod it gets confused and attempts to correct for non existent movement and causes all sorts of oddities in the image. Generally on longer exposures.

Newer versions of the IS system have tripod detection built in but still probably a safer bet to turn off for reasons John has stated above.

great post thanks for finding it stewart (I must be using the search wrong I typed in IS and tripods and could not fined anything :help:)
think it has answered all my questions as the next was going to be what about when on a monopod.
cheers guys
