I've found with both my lenses that if I leave IS turned on whilst on a tripod it gets confused and attempts to correct for non existent movement and causes all sorts of oddities in the image. Generally on longer exposures.
Rick, the forum's search facility can be very useful at times. It helped me find a thread that came up just the other day, which was called Tripod Mounted and Image Stabilisation.

think it has answered all my questions as the next was going to be what about when on a monopod.
