Is G12 twice as good as S90

I have a G9 but my kids have scratched the lens and it is very visible shooting towards light sources.

Local camera shop has second-hand S90 and G12 with the G12 just over tiwce the price of the S90. I do not take videos and used my G9 as my walkaround when I did not take my 5DII.

Thoughts pleaase.
 
I've heard the S90 described as a cut-down G11 (smaller zoom, no hot shoe or OVF), and the S95 as a cut-down G12, so, the S90 will be a generation behind the G12, and the lower model.
The G12 operation is likely to be very similar to your G9, and I've heard the S9? series described as "fiddly" to operate in comparison to the G1?'s
IIRC, the S95/G12 have HD video, the S90/G11 doesn't.

I'd say the best bet would be to go to the shop and have a good play with them both. See if you can get on with the S90 rather than the G series and if you can, go with that. I think all four mentioned camera's have the same 10Mpix sensor, so if you can live with it, and don't need the HD video (or the other cut-down bits), the S90 would be the better bet.
 
I went through an evaluation of the two when I bought one for my wife to give her something more portable than her 30D. I settled on the G12 (despite the price premium) for its standard hot-shoe, articulating screen, faster shutter speed and slightly longer lens at the tele end (140 v 105 equiv').
If none of those factors appeal then I guess you can save a few quid.

I went for an S95 as a truly pocket-able camera that shoots RAW, for me a G series would still end up staying at home, when I want something in between I use my G3.
 
Well I bought S90. Will post some shots when I get the opportunity to go out. It is, and has been, blowing a gale for days !!
