Is my VR working?

Hi. Is there any way of checking that the Vibration Reduction on my nikon 70-300 lens is working or not? It got dropped from around 5ft and the only visible damage was the UV filter was smashed but the front lens was fine.
Now for some reason i'm not sure that the vr is working.
I'm new to this dslr photography lark so all help greatly appreciated.

With the 70-300mm it's pretty clear if the VR is working, the VR motor starts whirring, and you can see stabilisation through the viewfinder.

So i should be able to hear the motor then.

Yep, motor will whirr away with shutter off pressed. You can see the image stabalise quite clearly when the lens is at 300mm

One way you can check is to focus on something (anything) where it's fairly quiet. You should hear the VR motor whirr. Don't take a shot, but just take the pressure off the shutter release but keep looking through the view finder. You should then see the image shift slightly as the VR switches off and you'll hear the motor click a little and then stop whirring.
