is the 24-70L worth £200 more than the 17-55 IS?

I know you will be getting bored with comparisons between these two lenses but having only used the 17-55 i am wondering whether the 24-70L can be worth £200 more?

I really liked the 17-55 and although it was a little on the short side for me it did give me the means of shooting large groups in fairly tight spaces. I was reading the review in The Digital Picture and it stated that the 17-55 was sharper at ALL overlapping focal distances. I am not going to go for the 24-105L due to needing this for some low light work so i was wondering if anyone has used both of these lenses could they tell me if the 24-70L is that much better or could my other £200 be put to better use?

I use a 50D just now and have no real plans to go full frame for a while anyway.
 
On FF, it's worth £1000 more, on crop, depends on what range you most shoot pat and what other lenses you have. But i wouldn't get the 24-70 if I already have the 17-55.
 
I was more than happy with my 17-40mm f4L but decided a 24-70mm f2.8L being sold on here was too much of a bargain.

Night and day to my old eyes, definitely sharper and more vibrant pictures, straight out of the box brownie!

Sure wished I had one at a wedding a few weeks ago.
 
If it's too short and you need the 55-70 range then it's worth the money, but there's the loss of the wide angle going from 17 to 24.

I've got the 24-70 and haven't used the 17-55 so I can't compare the IQ but absolutely love the lens, it deserves all the praise it gets and was worth every one of my pennies!

I think this is going to be a tough decision for you but by the sound of it you'll be very happy with either choice!
 
If you need longer just add a longer prime (85mm, 100mm, 135mm - there is something you will like) or 70-200mm f/2.8.

IF you already have 17-55 and stay with the crop it would be the most unwise to switch to 24-70.
 
I don't have the 17-55 it's just i've hired it before and enjoyed using it.
 
17-55mm f2.8 EF-S lens ideal lens for the cropped sensor. It depends what you want to shoot, but you lose the wide angle capability of the 24-70mm f2.8 on a crop sensor. The 24-70mm is a great studio lens and perfect partner for a full frame body, bit on the heavy side.

What lenses do you have at the moment and what do you mainly take photo's of
 
I would take what the-digital-picture says with a bit of a pinch of salt - a lot of their ISO chart comparisons on there for certain lenses really don't make much sense.

I would second that. photozone.de is the place to look for lens tests.
 
Cheers guys.I shoot a lot of portraits but having bought and sold a lot of lenses i find myself with a canon 70-200 F4L which i really lke and a canon 50D. I need a high quality standard zoom and went into Calumet to compare them and they didn't have a 24-70L. Next i went into jessops and they didn't have one either so i'm left to ask for opinions.
 
To the OP, on a crop camera there is nothing to touch the 17-55 2.8 - at any price.

To be fair to The Digital Picture, they own up to some inherant drawbacks of their testing procedure with specific reference to that lens. The text qualifies it as excellent.

For the most part I think their tests are very good, and for long lenses - especially with their clever comparison tool - the best on the web. DPReview are also very good.

...photozone.de is more often than not WAY off with its lens tests. The tests they undertake are far too technical, unrealistic and offer no real life comparisons.

Just my 2 pence worth.

Go for the EFS 17-55 IS.
