Hi

I am planning on getting my first DSLR at the end of the month, and came across this deal, it is a used camera.

CANON EOS 400D BODY & SIGMA 28-70MM F2.8-4 DG lens

For £269.99

Is this a good deal, and does anyone know what the lens is like?

Thanks
Vicky

Good lens, good body. The lens was quite cheap when released (about £200) but is regarded as a good buy if you do a search on the internet. The 400D is a nice little camera and perfect as a starter DSLR. You'd struggle to find a used 400D without a lens for that price.

In a nut shell, yes. I had the 28-70 f2.8-4. Its not the greatest lens in the world, but its a good little lens, perfect starter lens and is better then the usual kit lens. I used mine on the 350d and was happy with the results.

So yes, in a nutshell, get it :)

I was toying with the idea of a Nikon D40, but the lenses are limited on this one, and they are quite expensive aswell, and I have seen that canon do ALOT of lenses, and are much more affordable for me :)

I can get the D40 for £229 with the kit lens.

That lens is old. It dates back to pre-digital and 28mm is not really wide enough. The best starter lens for Canon is the kit 18-55mm IS, which is damn good.

That 400D doesn't look like a mega-bargain when you look at new Sony prices, or Nikon D40.

Don't be put of by the AF-S lens issue. There are far more coming out and as a result far more second hand.

Have a good fumble fo both cameras and see what you prefer. I was dead set on getting a Canon but it just did not feel right when I tried it. Tried the Nikon and it just felt right.

Good luck

But then ask the question is 55mm long enough?
I use the 24-70 f2.8, it lives on my camera, but then that suits the photography i do. You cant say 28mm isnt wide enough unless you know what the OP wants to shoot really.

Personally, i recommend the OP find a 20d and a Sigma 17-70 as that would be a better option, but since she asked is that a good deal, the simple answer for me is yes :)

By the same token then, you can't say that 28-70 is wide enough. But what you can say is that 28-70 was a kit spec lens for full frame film cameras, and that every other kit starter lens has a wide end of 18mm for crop cameras. In the absense of any specific information, I was assuming the regular 18-55 range would therefore be best.

17-55 f/2.8 lives on my 40D, and 20D has an LCD the size of a postage stamp ;) :)
