Yes
Just reading about google desktop.........surely the disc space can't be right?

6. What are the system requirements for running Google Desktop? Google Desktop is currently available for Windows XP and Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and above. To install it on an office machine, you should have administrator privileges (home users should not have this problem). It requires 500MB of available space on your hard disk and we recommend a minimum of 256MB of RAM and a 400MHz Pentium processor.

if its writing the locations etc of all the files on your comp then i would suspect it could be right. But thats not all it does though.

Surely you have 500mb of space you can spare? lol. that does seem a lot.

Does it not download and store web pages/sites to your hard drive? if it does and includes images etc then 500mb is quite fillable.

it needs to have a fair bit of space in order to store all those pages and other bits you've done before it reports back to google on you.

Its probably used for caching - instead of downloading the same images on mutliple returns it will cache pages incase you revisit that map location, unless theres an updated image - probably wont use that much in 99% of cases but will make it appear to run quicker for those that are frequent users.
