Issue with Canon EOS Utility

Hi all,

I'm now the proud owner of a MK IIN and after being wowed by the machine gun chatter of 8.5fps ;) I've decided I better look at the rest of the camera.

Part of this is getting it connected to the PC and this is where the problems are beginning. I've installed the Canon EOS Utility from the CD and then updated it from the Canon web site. The problem is that it just doesnt seem to recognise the camera as all the options are disabled bar 'Monitor Folder'.

This is even more frustrating because I've done this with two laptops (one Vista, one XP) and the same problem persists but the Operating systems can see it, even camera window can see it (as it complains its not compatible with this type of camera) but no... not the EOS Utility. :(

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, maybe the camera doesnt like me today or perhaps there is some obscure USB setting on the camera which I dont know about but if anyone can put me out of misery that would be much appreciated.

Thanks all!

Mark

(apologies if this is the wrong forum sub topic)

Is there a communications setting on that model. Some canons you have to change comms mode.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has to be connected using FireWire for many of the options to be available, but I could be wrong.

Think your right there, looking at the manual it appears to be firewire to connect to pc (IFC 200D4 Data cable).

Yeah it defo can only be used tethered with a firewire connection. Took me many many hours to figure that one out when I had my MK II N last year and even when I connected it to my Mac I still had problems.

So sorry to tell you this but it really can be a hassle to get going. Make sure you have the latest firmware on the camera and check that you have the latest version of EOS utility to ensure that all the drivers are matching and working.

Hope you get it sorted.

I have the same problem with mine, The mk3 works perfectly.

you can get firewire pci cards - I had one for my old skool ipod, more hassle than a hassly thing but it'll let you shoot tethered

Ah thanks all, firewire? Hrm.. I ditched 'tower/desktop' PC's a while back so just use laptops now and I'm fairly sure both of them (the one I'm using right now certainly does not) do not have firewire connections.

Bit of a bummer too as there are some odd personal settings from the previous owner that I need to change. :(

Anyway, thanks for everybody's help very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Mark

to add to that I do have firewire on my pc (on both of them) but neither recognise the 1D, I think because of the incompatible versions on the camera and pcs, even though I've updated firmware etc

I think the latest version of the firmware is still too old for the versions of firewire on the pc and I don't want to downgrade the pc. if you get it working post an update so other poor souls can get it to work

Hrm I've actually put a debug trace on the software and it seems to be only polling the first camera/device it finds in the list of that category type. So if you have say the drivers for a scanner installed it may just be looking at that if the Canon drivers were installed at a later date. Not 100% sure though as I had to head out.

I've got an idea (involving completely uninstalling other scanner/camera drivers) but can't try it until tonight. I'll let you know the results once some tests are done. :)

The 1d mk2 has to be connected by firewire to do that.
The usb is for direct printing only (plugging straight into a printer).

Thanks and a small update - with FireWire it worked fine.

Managed to get my hands on a mini pci firewire adapter for the other laptop (main one I use) and it works fine on there too.

I really can not understand why the normal USB is unable to take advantage of these features.
