Ive just bought

a nikon 50mm f1.8d lens and i'll be using it with my d40 using the joy of manual focus some of the test images are really good and really sharp as long as you allow for the depth of field being rather shallow .

now i have a question it seems that unless the apeture is locked at the highest number the camera wont take pictures with it ? anyone know any reasons why and will this effect my pictures or does it not matter too much?

That is correct, it's the same with a lot of lenses. It won't affect the pictures you're taking as the aperture will be set in-camera

ahh thats great as long as its nothing to worry about and one less thing to fiddle with as im (slowly) learning how to use manual focus !!
