I'm heading out to Japan this Friday for a two week holiday. I'll have my camera and a travel tripod with me (much to the wife's disapproval) so wanted to get a few suggestions for must-see locations to get some special shots.

We're going to be in Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo and Hakone over the course of the trip. Is it possible to see the Northern Lights from any of those locations?

I'm planning to take the 5D3, 24-105 and 17-40. I don't want to have the weighty 70-200 2.8 on me all the time so I'm going to leave that one at home.

I've only been to Tokyo in that list but it's an incredible city. Shibuya and Shinjuku are the 'neon light' districts and are well worth visiting at night (it's mega busy but remarkably relaxed so shooting with a tripod is usually fine). Tokyo Tower's worth visiting as well, it's a pretty immense city when viewed form up there!

Have a great trip! :)
