Hi all, will a Jessops 360afd flash work on a Canon 550d? And are they any good?

I have the 360 AFD and yes it will work with your 550D. I find that on my 450D it tends to overexpose unless I angle the flash up by 45degrees, other than that I think the flash is excellent value and performs well. When buying it budget in for some good rechargable batteries and you are away!
 
I'd try and get a second hand one though if you can, I paid £80 for mine then logged onto here and saw they were selling for around £40 :(
 
I have one of these and it works very well for what I use it for. it is never going to be a top of the range Canon flash but tis well worth its price tag.

Oh and look on ebay you can get them new for around £40

Why not look at the Nissin range of flashguns, I have a Di866 which is equivalent to canon 580EX and a Di622 which is equivalent to the 430EX. I got the Di622 recently off ebay for £95 posted and its a very powerful, well built and reliable flash. I use it on a Canon 550D and it has E-TTL capabilities for exposure and can be used remotely off camera with a 7D as well. Just checked and the guide no. for the Nissin is 44m at iso100 and the jessops 360afd is 36m at iso100.

I use mine on my 550D and am pretty happy with it. The 360AFD does come with a built-in optical slave mode, however in practice I can't see how to use it with the 550D's built-in flash being used as the trigger. As I understand it, the built-in flash on the 550D, sends out a preflash to 'test' the exposure. The pre-flash set off the 360AFD and it can't recharge in time for the main flash from the built-in flash, which is timed to go off when the shutter is open. I guess the only options are a dedicated hotshoe cable or preferably a set of flash triggers, which I believe only let you use the flash manually (unless you pay for the far more expensive ones). I've seen CT-04 and PT-04 trggers on Amazon (is there a difference?) without wishing to hi-jack this thread, can anybody recommend either?

I got my 360AFD from Jessops last Xmas for £59.
