Does anyone have any experience of returning lenses to jessops for a refund?
They state on the website that they'll accept unopened lenses for a full refund so it can get sold on, but who buys a lens and doesn't open it??

Anyway I think I can return it as I have all original packaging and it wasn't sealed when I got it.

Anyone ever had bother with this before??

If you bought it online from them and it's within 7 days you can return it under the distance selling regulations 2000 and you don't have to give any reason. If you bought it from a Jessops branch that wouldn't apply. But it's always worth asking them.

Thanks, I bought it from the shop so I'm taking it back tomorrow and I'll just have to see what they say

I opened the lens though, just have to tell a little white lie and get my money back. Just have to keep my fingers crossed, because if I get my refund, I can put the money towards a nikkor 70-300 vr instead of using the tamron.

I once tried to return a faulty grip to Jessops, the only item I ever purchased from them. I was told by the manager that being as I had the product or more than 30 days ( I owned it for 36 days) they would not give me a replacement nor a refund. Instead they offered to send it back to Canon for repair.
I was not a happy bunny but I did keep my cool and eventually, after a lot of negotiating, I did walk out with a replacement grip. I personally think there customer service is very poor and hence why I would never buy anything from them ever again.
Best of luck with your exchange.

There was an occasion once where I was sitting at one of the photo stations getting some prints done (just snapshots from my point & shoot btw!), a lady had gone in to ask about something & the guy who was 'helping' her was telling her a complete load of *******s & tried to get her to buy something that wasn't compatible with her camera, so I told her what she needed and that what she was about to spend money on was useless to her, and she left & went to another shop to buy the right product :P

Sounds to me as if they went above and beyond even the company policy to help you out.......

Some of the Scottish branches staff are members here.

You'd better hope they dont read this thread before you get there... The little white lie bit...

If an item is faulty, within 28 days Jessops will replace. If out of that they'll send it for repair, as any shop would.
Not sure what you expect tbh

I was just thinking that also, i know its an inconvenience but at the end of the day jessops didn't manufacture the grip, so its not really their fault.

I understand where you are coming from TheCrow, however when I purchased the grip from the retailer (Jessops), my contract was with them, not Canon. The grip did fail through no fault of my own so one could say it wasn’t of merchantable quality. So then why should I have to wait weeks to get a replacement?

The odd thing is that sometimes you can get quite a decent deal from them. I guess that's the real problem, just too many variables. Lousy top level management, no consistency with shop level management, and at least half the staff (and I'm not including foodpoison in this) either don't care or just haven't got a clue about what they're selling. Prices vary from absolutely bonkers high to the best you can find on the net. Weird just doesn't describe them.

I'd genuinely be sorry to see them fold because I think we'd all lose out. But I'll be amazed if they survive much longer.

Because that's the law, it wasn't Jessops' fault that the grip failed either, they could just have easily turned round and told you to send it to Canon yourself.

Given the fact that they were decent enough to take the grip back and give you a new one, you should be singing their praises, not having a go at them.

Am I the only person who wuld rather a faulty item went back then have it replaced ?
I remember once being told by someone in the manufactering industry that only one in so many 100 items were tested manuallly and settings reset if required, so if say you got the last one before the test it could be way off mark. Is it surprising that you get lenses that don;t focus properly etc ?
My Sigma 105 macro recently went wrong after 5 months, it went back to Sigma and has now been returned, fixed/serviced and recalibrated, got talking to the chap in the shop I bought it from and told him I might be selling it and his word swere that if he was in the market for the lens he would rather buy mine then a new as it would be better then those in the shop/

As flash said, that's the law.

First 6 months it's up to the retailer to fix it.
Second 6 months, it's up to you to prove it's broken.

They can do whatever they deem fit, be it send it back to canon for repair, or replace it.

Very, VERY few manufacturers would replace it when it was out of the cooling off period.

You took the S out of Jessops so as to not advertise them?
Well no offence mate, but you're no doubt the kind of customer that would put a downer on our day were you to come into my shop.

It's so strange, this pricing malarky. I've bought half my kit from Jessops, because even without staff discount it was a lot cheaper.
So strange.

I don't think they'll go anywhere. All our stock is sale or return, so the manufacturers wouldn't lose anything, and all the stores are rented.
We don't have much to lose. If we're put into Admin nothing will be achieved, but all our debts will surely be wiped clean and we'll start fresh, no doubt with some backing from someone big, like Tesco, or something similar.

Lens changed, no probs
top notch customer service, although I did leave with a more expensive 35mm nikkor, damn these guys and their voodoo magic.

I have to say that I've always had good service from Jessops, even down to letting me take shots with lenses I was interested in on my own camera ( at the door of the shop, not taken away.)

They have also replaced a Sigma lens because it just wasn't sharp and have always been very patient when I wanted to look at a particular camera.

Also the extended warrant they offer is, I think, very good value at approx 10% of the cost of a camera or lens.

Overall I have no complaints about Jessops service at all.

I actually bought a lens from them a month ago, used it on a good few occasions and then bought the same lens £50 cheaper on here. I chanced it and took it back as it was within their 30 day return period, they didn't even check to see the lens was in the box, let alone the condition of it. They just refunded me there and then and I saved £50.

I bought my D60 and lens in there as well as a couple of other bits, never had any issues other than the sales staff not knowing their stuff, for example telling me I needed a 58mm thread for a filter and happily selling me it, when it turned out it was a 52mm thread.

I'll always buy second hand whenever possible now so doubt I'll use them again, can't really fault them though.

got my best deal online from jessops recently
and collect at my local store...the trafford centre...5 miles away
they phoned me to say it was ready for collection

i did get a zoom from them in exeter and it went wrong...i posted it back..they sent it to tamron..it came back with every single thing fixed as a new lens
no charge except my postage to exeter

all in all we are really sitting ducks or fish in a barrel when it comes to the traders

amazon has been my best renew and no questions asked

i had a Xd card which went done on holiday...it fried...i could smell the thing
lost 260 shots
i had had it around 7 months
amazon said send it back with a note of your postage
they refunded + my postage

The guys in the Watford shop (and the second one which is now closed) have always been decent, with photographic knowledge.

Also getting a Sigma 105mm f2.8 lens at ~2/3rds cost helps too :D

I should be chuffed I managed to take back my Xbox 360 after 11 months and managed to walk out with a brand spanking new one as a replacement. The joys of being polite and keeping the packaging for everything.

Good luck taking the lens back.

I've heard a few reports about that too! I had to send mine in for repair every bloody time :(

It's a shame.
Someone gets good customer service, they'll tell 1 person.
Someone gets poor customer service, they'll tell 10 people.

Been on a customer service course? :p

In the age of the internet those figures are multiplied any number of times.

Jessops 30 day money back guarantee does not affect or override ones statutory rights under the sale of goods act

Jessops 30 day money back guarantee is not the law- the sale of goods act is

When someone buys something from Jessops the contract, legally binding, is with the seller, Jessops in this case, and not the manufacturer.

As the grip developed a fault in 36 days the buyer is entitled to reject the goods, demand a full refund and possibly claim damages

No matter what Jessops or any other retailer says, regardless of manufacturer's warranty, you can return goods that are unfit for purpose up to 2 YEARS after purchase under European Law...

I cannot remember the exact legislation involved, but there was a report in The Guardian a few weeks back on this subject...

*edit* I saved the article but it's back in the UK at my Dad's house right now (he's the Guardian reader...) - I'll get him to dig it out if he hasn't thrown it out by accident - always a possibility...lol

It doesn't (at least as far as I remember, anyway) give an automatic right to a replacement - the retailer would be within its rights to send it away from repair.

(A quick Google for the article you're referring to in the Grauniad threw up a story about a chap who fought Tesco over one of its own-brand LCD TVs that failed after 13 months. Tesco initially resisted but ultimately backed down. It was relevant to note however that the TV couldn't be repaired in that instance as they couldn't get parts for it. Had they been able to do so, they could have offered a repair instead.

In reality, the EU law referred to doesn't offer much more than the Sale of Goods Act 1979 does - in theory, that allows you a remedy up to 6 years after purchase. In reality, however, how long a court would consider a claim would depend very much on how much the item had cost to begin with and how long is considered a reasonable working life for it....

The big problem here is that a lot of retailers just don't know the law in this field and genuinely believe that they have no obligations after the statutory 12 month warranty expires. You can argue until you're blue in the face but frequently they won't back down as they really believe that they are in the right.

All too often, it's not until the court claim form is issued and served at their Head Office that a more sensible dialogue tends to take place!

I had my sb-800 repaired earlier this year by jessops, 2 weeks after going in for an estimate i had the quote back which i agreed to and 3 weeks later i had a letter and a phone call to say it was ready for collection at the quoted price of £83 which included vat to replace the flash tube, i could'nt fault there service.

The point being that even though the retailer may think something, in reality there are more strings to your bow than a lot of people realise - replacement or repair - as long as you get a working lens, it's all good, surely?
