i though of this basic Q today.

i can make / take a 3mb Jpeg.
I can also save that same pic out as a 20Mb tiff ( one layer )

now i know (think ) a tiff can have layers but is there any difference in the flat final image, in respect of print quality at A4 A3 sizes ?

what the difference bascially ?
be nice to know.:cuckoo::bang:

In print, no there's no difference. Once you have a final edit then jpeg is the best file format for display and print.

That raises the very valid point of jpeg quality. A maximum quality jpeg will hold more data than a printer will print. If you go for small file sizes and large amounts of compression, you will very much compromise the quality of any output.

I used to give clients tiff files as a matter of routine, mostly in excess of 100mb each, as I wanted to make sure they got the highest quality possible for print. In the end I swaped to max quality jpegs as printers all said they would produce equal finished product.

No difference for print, but the JPEG will lose quality every time you open and save it.... the TIFF won't, so if you shoot JPEG best to save a copy as TIFF in a sub folder and you'll always have the original quality with them....

thanks everyone, just clarified for me there no point send a larg tiff to a printer rather than a full res Jpeg.

mmmm - unless the tiff is 16bit - jpegs are only 8bit
