Jupiter is going to be at it's closest in the coming weeks, apparently we'll be able to see the bigger moons pretty easily!

Does anyone know how good a shot you can get with relatively standard SLR kit?

I'm no expert by any means but from what I have read on some astro forums, to get detail in the planet you will lose the moons in your shot. To get the moons in the shot Jupiter will be blown out with no detail, just like a normal star. Hope that makes sense.

Yeah, you can get the moons fairly easily with standard kit, but Jupiter will be a big, overblown blob as there is such a huge discrepancy in exposure values.
Still, it's nice to see the moons.

Presumably you could do something about that with multiple exposures (I'm not usually into HDR but one of Jupiter, how cool would that be?!)
