I was playing around with the IS switch on my lens and noticed with the shutter button half pressed and IS on, the image through the viewfinder was... steady? I turned IS off and it was more jerky as you'd expect it.

I'm pretty sure I'm not high on anything either lol.

I thought IS corrected lens alignment during exposure by physically moving lenses, how is this continuous smoothing achieved?

IS initiates when the button is half pressed and continues to correct movement during the exposure that's just the way it works. it is a weird experience when you first notice it...
 
works differently than in body IS Lens based is real time in the viewfinder , body based isnt

People claim that lens based is better for that very reason
