I've written enough about my earlier experiences with CSC models, and was less than impressed with all the ones I tried from Olympus and Panasonic, and thought the E-M5 at over a grand was mad IMO.
Anyway, I somehow ended up buying a Nikon J1 twin lens kit this week, (it was cheap, it looked nice and feels far better built than my other CSC models I've had, so credit card out and bought
).
Initial thoughts, it's well built, feels like it was built with quality parts, it's small and comfortable in the hand.
In use, AF in the J1 absolutely murders the m4/3rds models I had, and it really is fast in operation, matching many DSLRs I've used.
But the big thing? It's the first CSC I've been impressed with regarding IQ, no blotchy skies a'la the E-PL2, and with very nice colours unlike the Panasonics, and noise that is a large improvement over them, I was unhappy with the M4/3rds at ISO 400, I'm surprised at the J1 even above ISO 1600, this camera seems to have noise more like grain on high speed film, it is far nicer and smoother without the colour noise of the others.
And even at higher ISO its still sharp with very little objectionable noise..
For example, this is at ISO 1800
I always discounted the Nikon 1 series, with the erroneous attitude about its even smaller sensor than m4/3rds, but the sensor in these really seems special, I've printed some enlargements out to approximate A3 and they look good, I'll be sending some away for an A3 canvas and poster to check for definite, but this little camera is really impressive so far.
