As I have the above.... I'm wondering (no doubt a right stupid question) BUT is it safe to leave the 8 AA batteries in the MB-D10 tray whilst not in use & stored away, just for convenience sake of not having to keep putting them in everytime...

Will it run down the batteries  I'm thinking that it wont as it would be no different as to store them in a plastic case...

Or have I just answered my own question and made a right fool of myself :$

I've not heard of any negative issues, I do it myself with the MB-D10 tray, and the battery packs for the SB-900s, but I do top 'em up the night before a shoot.

I have two trays for the batteries on the D700 and I store 8 Eneloops in each tray plus sets in each flash plus 4 plastic boxes with 4 in each.

Probably safer than having them scattered in a pocket or sleeve. It could have been a very unlucky one off, but I had four AA batteries loose in a rucksack pocket for a few hours and went to grab them and they were roasting hot!

Not sure why, maybe some weird polarity type thing happened from how they were sitting next to each other in the pocket caused a chemical reaction or something but from then on I've always made sure they are either stored in the recharger unit or securely next to each other facing the same way (as they are in the box when you buy them).

Cheers for that John - Good to knowing that someone does store 'em in theirs with out having any issues....

Also thanks to Cowasaki & Gman as well for your input.... much appreciated
