Kit lens alternatives?

Hi folks.

Currently using a Nikon D50 with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Just wondering if anyone can suggest some nice glass that I could use as an alternative. Looking for something that covers the same range (approx) and something that is pretty fast. Also, not too expensive!!!! Do such things exist ??? ;)

Not worried about anything bigger as I already have a 70-300 plus TC's etc - but would like to replace the kit lens and do tend to use both ends of the range often!!

No doubt you lot will (as always) be able to advise me on something suitable!!!

Must dash - off to check out any bargains at a car boot sale!!

Cheers.

Anth.

The 17-70mm Sigma is about as good as it gets price/quality ratio wise.

Both sigma and tamron make 2.8 standard 18-50 ish zooms. Neither as good as the 1k Nikon version but both about a third of the price.

Try them if you can!

Another vote for the Sigma 17-70, its not 2.8 across its zoom but this doesn't bother me. Its really sharp, suffers no chromatic apparition and it can be used as 1:2 macro and will focus with the glass almost on the subject. For about £200 I cannot fault it.

If you are up in the area you could try it out Anth as mine is a nikon mount.

Cheers people!!

Wile, thanks for the offer of the trial. Not sure when I am back up in the north east - probably a fortnight or so - but I may well take you up on that offer!!!!

Off to have a lookl at that Sigma lens in more detail!!!

Anth.

PS - bought nowt at the car boot sale.
