Kit Lens Replacement For Sony

My Dad is after replacing his basic Sony Kit Lens and is considering the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 either with OS or without and as I am not familiar with either the lens or what is available I would like to know what people consider to be a good choice. The one with OS is about £350 so any alternatives suggested could not really be much more than that.

What about the Tamron 17-50 2.8 also

i've had the sigma 17-70[non OS],and can highly recommend it.replaced it with the sigma 18-50 F/2.8 as i wanted the constant aperture for low light shooting,which again,i can highly recommend..love mine.a mate has the tamron 17-50 F/2.8,and loves it...don't think you can go wrong with either to be honest.some shots taken with my 18-50...
