I was having a go with this at shooting indoors without flash because when i use flash i get white in the eyes any help appreciated hope to have another go tommorow maybe using a tripod

The picture of patient forbearance! Try not to clip his paws out. You have some great detail in his coat (isn't black just hard) I like the catchlight in his eyes and on his nose.

Really expressive face too, great picture.

Try getting the dog near to a window or patio door etc. to get as much natural light as possible.
Try with the light coming from different angles rather that just head on. Side lighting can make for more interesting shots - e.g. half head in shade and other side "correctly" exposed.
