My Son is looking to buy a used lens for landscape shots.

With a small budget its proving very difficult indeed, and i can see him losing interest in photography before his even started.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Camera body,,,,, Canon 400d

The beauty of landscape photography is that it's a great 'leveler' as there's not always a requirement for long focal lengths or large apertures.

Is he without a lens ?

I only ask as a modest kit lens is perfectly adequate for producing great results.

Something starting at 17mm or 18mm on a crop body would provide a decent amount of width.

What kind of budget is he working to ?

Get a Canon 18-55mm IS, it's a reasonable price and a great starter lens with handy focal lengths for landscape work. This is what I started off with many years ago and was what got me further interested in the hobby. :)
 
Hi Dinners,

He has an old lens off a 35mm camera, think its a 35-70mm which is fine for portraits etc

Budget is £120 ish with my help.

You might find a used Canon 17-85mm IS USM for that. It's a bit more robust than the 18-55mm kit lens, 17mm is a nice width for landscapes (without being silly wide) and it's a decent walkabout range with IS coming handy at the longer 85mm end.

EDIT - Just noticed you've come down to £120 which probably rules out my suggestion.

The 18-55 is well within your budget.

35-70 should be fine for landscapes on a crop body as 35 at the wide end is equivalent to about 50mm on a full frame body which is an ideal focal length for landscape.

I think it's always best to make the most of kit you already have if it does the job.

This is kit lens so you should be able to source one with in budget, I think I ebay'd mine for about £90. It was as new with almost no use, only because I was shooting a lot of long range stuff when I got my 400D w/18/55is. IQ is wel matched to 400D:thumbs:

Actually it's equivalent to 56mm and it's far from being ideal for landscapes. :nono:

Slightly longer than 50mm equivalent on a 1.6x crop agreed, but not that different.

I think that 50mm is good for landscape as it gives a good balance between distance detail and foreground detail.

I find that wide angle ends up giving you a lot of detail of close up items but distant things are way too small.
 
Another vote for the kit lens here. It's uber cheap and fine for landscapes.

Why? There's more to both landscape and wide angle lenses than getting it all in.

I'm in danger of becoming a parrot here but I do wish that people would see beyond the cliches of... landscape = wide angle, portrait = 85-200mm, walk about = 17-50mm... and be more creative.
