Off the wall techy question for those so minded pple on here that I have seen solve problems before :)

My son is away at university and has just messaged me that he is having problems with his dvd drive on his little over year lappie - its either reading/not reading/or freezing on discs and throws up the following message:

D:\ is not accessible
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

He has not downloaded anything new recently and is running a full system scan. Has tried CCleaner but that has not solved it.

Anyone with any suggestions/solutions greatly received(y)

It might well be going faulty, is this a built in drive or external?

/on the other hand hypnotic may be right :)

I've had at least 3 DVD CD/RW combo drives fail on me in the past when I used the DVD tray allot - funny thing is that they always seemed to fail at about 12 - 18 months.

Daft as it sounds Lappy DVD drives are only built to be used occasionally, so if your son is using his lappy to watch DVD's or listen to CDs everyday, it does sound like a failing drive to me.

I've not had one fail since I've ripped all my music to MP3 and recorded by DVD's to High Quality Ipod format.
