We're thinking of getting one of the kids a laptop for Christmas and obviously we don't want to spend a fortune. What are your views on this Acer laptop from Tesco and could we get a similar or slightly less specced one for less money?

PERHAPS CONSIDER ONE OF THOSE £200 NOTEBOOKS? not massive spec but i dunno how old the kids are and wht they want to use it for
 
Have you looked at PC World ? They often have some great deals on laptops.

Acer lappys are normanlly great value for money, but their after sales serive is dire if anything does go wrong.
One of mine is an Acer and nowt has gone wrong in the three or so years I have had it.
 
I got the 5920g recently which is basically the same but with a higher spec (4gb, 250gb, ATI gfx, blueray) and it's great. Of course it depends what it will be used for but general web/office/school work and it's more than enough. Not sure how the Intel gfx chip would cope with games if that's a consideration?
 
Alway worth checking if dell have any specials, PC World do the price match for brands, or just go to you local independant shop and see what they say.

I got a gaateway from tesco, and they were easily the cheapest for the spec.

It would be worth knowing what your kids will use it for, and whether you might "borrow it" to put snaps on etc.

also look at the pcworld refurb site.

And check out your local WEEE (electrical) recycling company, they will often have older laptops, but still with decent specs at a fraction of the new price. If they will mainly be using t'internet as long as they have a decent moden, some good memory you should be fine.

Acer are known for offering good value. They do not say in your link what warranty they offer. Dell offer a 1 yr collect & return which you can upgrade. Toshiba offer 3yr on most of their range. Both will cost more than this for similar spec though so you pay your money you take your choice.

A Macbook would cost you at least double ;)
 
Acer are pretty good per se, but having had 2 in the family where the hinges broke
( screen to keyboard) I would find it tough to actually reccommened them .........sorry

Both times they broke just as the warrenty ran out, but did get the repair done FOC after a little battle and some reasonable assistance from our local "Staples"
