Hi

looking at a new laptop, found a dell one which looks good which has 4GB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (Sounds good!?) but comes with a Dual Core Processor T4200 (2GHz, 800MHz, 1MB Cache)

Optionally for £70 extra is a Core 2 Duo Processor T6400 (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB LE Cache)

I've lost track of processor technology in recent years so dont know what is best - is the upgraded processor worth the extra cost? what extra will it give me?

laptop to be used for photo processing, browsing - thats about it!

Its the next generation and will most likely be 10% quicker (at processing) so your laptop will most likely actually be about 5% quicker.

They are both 45nm penryn cored processors.
The only difference being the T6400 has twice the amount of cache. 2mb vs 1mb
So unless you are utilising programs that will make use of the extra cache then you`ll see little to no real world gains.

You mention photoshop, If you are doing processor intensive operations like multiple image focus stacking etc. then you`ll get a little benefit. As above probably 5% decrease in time taken to complete the task.
But IMO unless you've got a stop watch out then the gains are not noticeable .

I dont think you need that extra 70 pounds for a bit faster CPU!
The T4200 would be fine.
