Laptop Problem

My neighbour asked me if I could take a look at his laptop as the cd drive stopped working. It is an Advent 7113 model ( yeh dont tell me:D ) I could only find out that there was a conflict with the drive and Sata driver in device manager, but had to wait for him to come home late last night from work as he had Admin rights to change anything. All I tried was to uninstall and see if it was recognised on boot up, problem was as by the time I uninstalled and powered it off, it was recognising the Sata drive and trying to reinstall again. I burnt an iso of the recovery disc last night ready to have a look again today, but my feeling is I reckon is the drive must just be shot. Just wondered if anybody else had any dealings with this laptop and could advise?
Thanks

what kind of conflict is it? resource? the only way youll be able to resolve that would be to manually change the resource for one of the devices to a setting thats available.

odd thats suddenly started happening though, normally harware grabs resources and stick to them for life.
