I recently tried to install the latest 7D firmware upgrade, but am having no luck. I have downloaded the latest version (version 1.2.5 windows), as my 7D is currently running version 1.1.0. My PC is running windows 7, 64-bit.

I have downloaded the file to my CF card (which I formatted in 7D before download), but when I follow the instructions to install, the camera doesn't seem to read the file. I have the dial set to 'P', as per instructions.
I have checked, and the file is deffo on the card (all 12.7mb). I have also attempted to open the file with my PC, but get the message that Windows is unable to open file?

Any ideas, guys?

Not sure but I think formatting in camera will place a couple of directorys on the card, the FIR file should be on a blank card in the root directory.
 
As ken says, the new firmware, needs to be in the root of the card and not in any folder.

If you have it like this, I'd suggest maybe starting again and do a new download etc
 
Hi Phillip, it should be pretty staright forward. I would suggest saving the file to your PC. If you are still stuck then check out the video. Looks like version 2 is scheduled for August at the moment.

Cheers, guys. A couple ot things to try, then. Kinda hoping Canon have sneaked in a repair for the autofocus issues on the 7D! ;) Knowing my luck, probably not!

I also have a 1DMk2N, and my hit-rate with it (with regards to sharp images) is much higher than with my 7D. Mind you, there are many more custom functions on the 7D, and I possibly need to tweak some of them? However, I have checked on here, and other forums, and my settings seem to be the same as recommended?

There have been numerous occasions when I have been tracking a car through a corner when, after having achieved focus, the camera goes completely oof on fully depressing the shutter, and won't focus. This seems to happen more in lower light. This has never happened with my Mk2.

There are numerous threads on other forums, and online, with 7D owners not happy with the focus-tracking.....surely they can't all be wrong?

Depends if they are all at DPreview or not. They don't actually use cameras over there, just whine and bitch about them! ;)

I have experienced the issue you describe though, whilst shooting flying puffins recently. I just adjusted my technique a little an found the settings that worked best for me. The settings some swear by may well not be right for you.
