LED Monitors - worth changing ?

Hi Guys,

I've used a viewsonic 22" LCD monitor for a couple of years now with no issue. I'm wondering if it's worth changing to the new LED monitors that are now available ?

Have people who've moved over found them to be better for image processing on ?

Obviously they are thinner and use less power but i'm more interested in whether the picture is better for developing photos on ?

I'd also heard calibration tools may not work with LED monitors - is this true ?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

As long as they are IPS type, they are a little better. The blacks are darker, and they are more evenly lit, but even so this should only be visible in a very dark room, and dark pictures (like movies).

LED has no visible warm up time and has a much longer life, where as a CCFL will be noticeably darker after a year or 2s average use.

Not really warranting an upgrade tbh, but if buying a new monitor, try and get an LED one. If an identical CCFL model was available for 20% less I'd probably go for that.

I hope the dimming problem is not 2 bad as just checked the "info" panel on my 2 year old HP ZR22w screen and it says total accrued backlight time is 4318 hours, so about 6 hours per day on average!

Can I just turn up the backlight brightness when it dims? ;)

I use a Dell U2711 which uses CCFL backlighting whereas the Apple version with the same panel uses LED backlighting, the Dell however has a wider colour gamut than the Apple version thanks to the choice of CCFL.

so it sounds very much like the marketing people hoping we'll refresh when in reality we dont need to.

Thanks all - think i'll leave it till the prices fall further or mine breaks :)
