Lens advice please

I want to do more street and candid photography

i'd like to be a little further away from whatever subject than my stock 18 - 55mm lens will allow but closer than my 75 - 300mm will allow

is there a more happy medium i should be looking at?

i have a canon 1000D and the cheaper the better. stupid unemployment :bonk:

Look at the 55-250 IS lens , apparently its a cracker and complements your kit lens.

Depending on IQ needed you could look to one of the superzooms such as the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD, it is a crop only mounting though - worth noting if you ever consider going full frame.
