i have a canon 400D and my main interest is motorsport in particular bikes, and i'd like some advice regarding a suitable lens...
would i be right in thinking that a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM would be perfect for the job or could i do it with something considerably cheaper ?
i currently have a canon EF 75 - 300mm 1:4-5.6
any advise please..........

not sure if you need the 400mm, if not the 70-300IS seems to have a very good rep

If you looking within a budget then for about £400 / 450 you can get the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS, (don't get confused as there are a number of canon lenses with similar discriptions). This lens is a little gem and takes some very good images. Not a great fan of the budget long zooms offered by sigma (50-500mm or 150-500mm), but the 100-300mm f4 is another alternative, but similar price to the 100-400mm.

However, doing quite abit of motorsport myself, you have to take into account the standard of photography access to these race tracks, alot have heavy fencing which the 300mm won't cope with (even on a cropped sensor) and your'll be looking at a longer zoom. The 100-400mm offers affordability and versatility and a cheaper alternative to the primes.

thanks for the replies chaps.............

Have you considered the Sigma 120-400mm OS? It's very good value lens.

thanks, i will do a little research...........

When you've done the research, get yourself a 100-400L. You'll not regret it :)
