hi folks,
this advice thing seems never ending, Iv'e got a canon 1000d with the standard 18/55 zoom, if I set it on the widest setting I get slight dark patches round the outside of the snap [I think its called vingetting] question is whats the most eccnomical lens to avoid this and is it normal with canon. Do I have to spend mega bucks on a wide angle prime and what to get
 
That is strange. I have a 550D with the 18-55 IS kit lens, but I don't see the similar problem. Are you using any filter or big len hood by any chance? If not and it is very slight, you may be able to fix it afterward with software.
 
Iv'e put a polaroid filter and a rubber lens hood on it.Could this be the problem,just noticed it only I don't know how long it's been like it.
 
Vignetting will be more obvious when the aperture is wide open. If you have plenty of light, the camera will close the aperture (the f number) down and you will avoid the problem. How you avoid this is dependent on what you shoot and how you do it. A prime is the best way to get "fast" lens (i.e. one that has a big hole for the light to pass through). You could start by looking at using lighting better (very cheap) or spending £70ish on a"nifty fifty" (50mm f1.8). It may be cheap, but it's a darned good lens to work with...
 
Try taking a few test shots without the hood and filter. That could be the problem. If so get the genuine hood for it.
 
I used to have a sony lens that always has bad vignetting when using polarizing filter ( probably that the filter was too thick ) at 18mm. Also, I think I've seen the rubber lens hood. It's the one that can be folded back and forth, right? In that case, it was designed to be folded almost completely backward when using with the kit lens at short focal length, I think. Look at the official lens hood for 18-55, that's the length that it should be.
 
Is the hood actually designed for the lens? If not it will almost certainly be the cause.
 
It was really designed for this kit lens. Basically, you fold it backward when shooting wide, and fold it forward when shooting long, as compared to the always short official hood. It is much cheaper, and I have not used it, so I have no idea if it is even useful.
