Lens Choice help

Good morning everyone,

I have fairly recently bought a Canon 1D Mkii, absolutely love it but the only think is the 18-55 doesnt work on it. Didnt think it would be too much of an issue but it is starting to be an issue for me for sport etc.

Any suggestions on a suitable lens for the 1D? May have to sell the 450D and kit lens to fund the new lens.

What lenses do you already own? The 18-55 isnt a particularly effective sports lens regardless! As already said, the Canon 70-200 f/4L or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM II are ideal sports lenses and are FF compatible.

EDIT - just looked in your camera bag and see you already have the Canon 70-200 f/4L. I dont see what the issue is now?!

Ah I see! On FF for really wide stuff it gets expensive. The Sigma 12-24 is rated by some on here, and is probably the most inexpensive, very wide option for FF.
 
Some say its one of the poorer L lenses with a bit of corner softness. However, you could live with that if its main use is for close sports I should imagine? Note - I've not used the 17-40 myself!

Very true! But it's still stuck with EF lenses so still, the sigma 12-24 is the cheapest option for ultra wide angles.

I'm taking shots of my new kitten indoors and I'm amazed at using my 70/200 F4 L. I also have a 24/70 (2.8L) but the framing is better with the longer lens, but they compliment each other well and a 1.3 crop on a 24mm focal length gives you 32mm in effect which is pretty wide plus the 70 becoms almost a 100mm length. Both are really nice lenses but a grand each makes them expensive.
I also have an old 70/200 f3.5/4.5 (think the aperture is correct, it varies anyway) on the wife's camera and that's a nice lightweight lens, no IS but great value second hand, dont get the fixed F4 though it wasnt quite as good.
