Yes
im still fairly new to photography.
I have a canon eos 550D with an 18-55mm canon lens 55-250 canon lens and a 150-500 sigma lens.

I've seen that sigma do a 18-250 mm lens but am unsure of the compatability, it would be better for me to have an 18-250mm lens instead of swapping over the lens all the time !

The Sigma lens im looking to buy is:
Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens for Canon

can anyone tell me what letters im looking for on the lens?

The DC in Sigma lens descriptions means for crop sensor bodies & for Canon means for Canon! ;)

These hyperzooms ain't all that they are cracked up to be, generally for a zoom, the ratio should be 1:4, so 70-300mm an ideal example, you've bought an SLR, single lens reflex, its an interchangeable lens system, so you use the right lens for the right situation, so these so called all in one lenses promise the earth and deliver very average performance, so in answer to you question, happy snappy lens in good light, ok, but don't expect miracles, ideal for perhaps a holiday lens, but no more.
